Dustin Pedroia Stack?

Every time I go up to the superintendent's office at Sanborn, people tell me I look exactly like Dustin Pedroia. I never really saw the connection. But tonight, I was given another reason to rethink this. As I was walking out of Dunkin Donuts, a guy walked by me and turned around quickly. He looked at me and said.."Woah, I thought you were Dustin Pedroia for a minute!" What do you think, do I look like him? Maybe I could attend events as his "double". I wonder what that would pay....

New PIctures!

Here's a "preview" of some of the Christmas portraits.

Get Aboard the Dane Train!

Erica and I got aboard the Dane Train Saturday night, as he played to two packed houses at the Garden. We had some great seats, right down front.
Dane came out wearing a Sox jersey, shouting "How about those Sox!" He then took it off to reveal his Celtics jersey, saying "they are pretty damn good too." Fianlly, he ripped that off, revealing his 1985 AFC champs Pats T-shirt, proclaiming, "And how about the Pats!"
Dane did a lot of new material. That Dane Cook, he's a silly guy!

Tales at the Portrait Studio

We made a rookie mistake two years ago when we got Brady's first set of professional pictures taken. Armed with the theory that we only wanted the "best" for our son, we were sucked into spending almost $300 at the Picture People at the mall. Needless to say, we have long since learned that there is nothing wrong with JC Penny's studio.

That said, we thought today would be a good day to get the boys pictures taken. We called the store and made an appointment for 4:30. Knowing that we were headed there with two young kids and wanting them to at the very least be in a good mood, we carefully planned out our day in advance. At 12:30, Brady had a big lunch and went down for a nap. We kept Cameron at bay until 2:30, when we gave him a bath and got him changed into his Christmas sweater. Erica took her shower and did her make-up, and I followed with my shower. By 3:30, Brady was up and her was the last one to get ready. We were out the door by 4:00, armed with a bag full of diapers, toys, snacks, bottles, and sippy cups.

We arrived a little early for our appointment. To our horror, the waiting area was jam-packed with families waiting to have their picture taken in the single studio. As we figured, they were running about an hour behind schedule. We decided to whether the storm and play man-to-man defense. At our house, Erica and I are either using man-to-man or zone defense to take care of the boys, depending on the situation. Today was a good man-to-man opportunity. She took Cameron out to feed him and hopefully wake him up. I took Brady to get a pretzil with cheesey dipping sauce. We waited, but luckily both boys were good. As our turn was getting near, Brady was starting to tell us how he got his picture taken back in May in this studio with Babcia and Dziadziu. I don't know how he remembers all of this, but he does. It is kind of strange.

Our turn came up, and in we went. For the most part, the boys cooperated as we went through the different poses. Then, we went and ordered our pictures. By this time it was 6:30, and both boys were showing signs of fatigue. Cameron was getting cranky, and Brady just wanted to be put down so he could run around the store. Somehow, we managed to keep them entertained while we looked through pictures.

We finally left the store close to 7:00 and completely exhausted. In the car, I told Erica how I saw a young couple with an infant in the studio. I remembered that it wasn't that long ago that we were in that same situation, but now with two kids and our hefty double-stroller, it is more than double the work to do something like we did tonight.

But, I think it will be worth it. The pictures came out great!

Its Turkey Time!!!

Its almost time for Thanksgiving. Every year around this time, I offer my tips to turkey success. If you want the moistest, juiciest, tastiest bird you've ever had, I suggest you brine your turkey. A brine is super easy to make, and you leave the bird to soak in it over night. People always ask me, doesn't it make the bird salty? Not in the least!!!! The salt helps to promote osmosis, which carries the spices and flavors in the brine deep into the meat. If you'd care to try it, I offer Alton Brown's recipe below (if you get a chance to offer his special, "Romancing the Bird," on Food Network, it is the same recipe. Two things you'll want to remember as you do this: You don't need to stuff this bird...it cooks faster if you don't (which means less dry time). Also, use a probe thermometer for accurate cooking. It will come out perfect every time!

What you need:
1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey

For the brine:
1 cup kosher salt
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 gallon vegetable stock
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
1/2 tablespoon allspice berries
1/2 tablespoon candied ginger
1 gallon iced water

For the aromatics:
1 red apple, sliced
1/2 onion, sliced
1 cinnamon stick
1 cup water
4 sprigs rosemary
6 leaves sage
Canola oil

Combine all brine ingredients, except ice water, in a stockpot, and bring to a boil. Stir to dissolve solids, then remove from heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.

Early on the day of cooking, (or late the night before) combine the brine and ice water in a clean 5-gallon bucket. Place thawed turkey breast side down in brine, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area (like a basement) for 6 hours. Turn turkey over once, half way through brining.

A few minutes before roasting, heat oven to 500 degrees. Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes.
Remove bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard brine.

Place bird on roasting rack inside wide, low pan and pat dry with paper towels. Add steeped aromatics to cavity along with rosemary and sage. Tuck back wings and coat whole bird liberally with canola (or other neutral) oil.

Roast on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F. for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cover breast with double layer of aluminum foil, insert probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and return to oven, reducing temperature to 350 degrees F. Set thermometer alarm (if available) to 161 degrees. A 14 to 16 pound bird should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let turkey rest, loosely covered for 15 minutes before carving.

Jump Around!

After watching Brady jump on the couch, the bed, the chair, the floor, and anything he could get his hands on, we figured a good birthday gift for him would be his own miniature jump house, which has found a home in Brady's "indoor playground," aka our finished basement.

No More Suffering

My boys will never know what it was like. For 86 years, I suffered, my father suffered, my grandfather suffered, longing to see the Sox win the World Series. And a superbowl? No one ever would have expected the Pats to actually take it all. But now, I've seen with my own eyes three Superbowl victories, and two World Series. My boys can actually say they were alive whent he Sox won a World Series Championship. And if the Pats keep playing the way have been, they might see a Superbowl Championship one day soon too. 9-0. Nice job Pats!

Halloween 2007

Well, Haloween 2007 was quite a success. Brady went out with Mackenzie and Ryan to do toddler trick-or-treat downtown in the morning. As you can see, Dad has absolutely no say in Brady's choice of costume this year, which is why he is dressed as a pumpkin. Cameron was a peapod.

In the evening, Brady went trick-or-treating in my old neighborhood with all of his friends (Amy, Sam, etc.). Again, he had quite a good time, and got some great candy!
